WordPress Editor Gets Resizable Screen and Sharper Image Cropping

WordPress.com has released a series of updates to its editing interface, introducing a resizable editor for testing layouts across different screen sizes, a precision image cropping tool, and new icon manipulation controls. These changes were delivered between July 3 and July 16, 2026, as part of the platform’s latest bi-weekly changelog.

The most significant change in this update is a redesigned editor that allows users to drag the edge of the editing window to any width. Previously, users were restricted to viewing content at three preset screen sizes. This new feature offers a continuous range of display sizes, enabling creators to see how their content will appear on devices of various dimensions, including phones and tablets, before publishing.

A second major upgrade involves image cropping. The new cropping tool presents a zoomed-in view of an image, enabling more accurate alignment. This enhancement is now also available within the Cover block, a feature commonly used for full-width banner images. The update aims to reduce guesswork when users need to precisely frame an image or focal point.

The Icon block within the WordPress editor has also received new functionalities. Users can now flip icons horizontally or vertically and apply rotation controls directly from the toolbar. This removes the need for custom code or external image editing software for these specific adjustments, allowing for faster icon orientation.

Beyond these feature additions, the update includes several reliability and performance fixes. According to the official changelog, the Help Center no longer crashes when loading support articles, resolving a bug that prevented users from accessing documentation.

A serious checkout bug has been fixed. The issue caused a blank screen and, in some cases, created an accidental duplicate site when a user navigated away from and then back to a payment screen. Additionally, the system now shows a clear error message if adding a domain to a shopping cart fails, rather than letting the option disappear without notification.

Other fixes addressed user interface inconsistencies. The platform stopped displaying upgrade prompts in the Stats area for products a user already owns. A new warning has been added to the Form block, alerting users if the form is not configured to collect submissions, which previously could cause user input to be lost without any indication of failure.

A critical subscription issue has also been resolved. Paid subscribers were reportedly losing access to members-only content within the Paid Content block after a subscription renewal. The underlying error has been fixed to ensure continuous access for paying members.

Finally, the platform updated its core software to WordPress 7.0.1, a maintenance release provided by the WordPress open-source project. This update ensures the platform remains on the latest stable version, addressing underlying system stability and security.

The bi-weekly release cycle for WordPress.com updates means users can expect further refinements and new features to be published in the coming weeks, based on ongoing development from the WordPress core and Gutenberg teams.
