Automattic has released the beta version of WordPress 7.0 for users on Business and Commerce plans, marking a significant step forward in the platform’s development cycle. The update, detailed in the latest WordPress.com changelog covering April 12 to 23, 2026, introduces a new one-click solution for plugin-related errors and a revamped support interface.
WordPress 7.0 Beta Opens for Early Testing
Users on eligible plans can now test the upcoming WordPress 7.0 release on both live and staging sites. The beta can be activated by navigating to Sites, selecting the desired site, and accessing Settings followed by Server and then WordPress. A dropdown menu allows users to select the beta version. Automattic noted that the platform takes an automatic backup of the site before switching versions. Users remain on the latest beta iteration as new builds are released, and they can revert to a stable version at any time through the same settings interface.
One-Click Plugin Error Recovery Introduced
Automattic has implemented a new feature designed to mitigate the impact of plugin-induced fatal errors. When a plugin causes a critical failure, site owners no longer encounter an unresponsive white screen. Instead, an error page is displayed that identifies the specific plugin triggering the problem. A Deactivate button is provided, which functions even when the site cannot load normally, allowing the offending plugin to be disabled before it can execute again. For visitors, the system displays a clean, non-technical apology message without alarming details. Automattic stated that its support team continuously monitors for potential plugin issues and proactively seeks solutions to prevent errors from affecting site users. A dedicated team of Security Specialists works on detecting and resolving malware and other security threats, with updates communicated via email.
Support Center Upgraded with Assistant Chat
The WordPress.com Support Center now features a new search functionality that launches the Support Assistant by default for all users, regardless of login status. This chat interface can provide answers to specific queries, highlight relevant support resources, and connect users with a human support engineer if necessary.
Additional Updates and Fixes
Automattic also shipped several reliability and polish updates across the platform. These include an explicit confirmation screen when connecting a WordPress.com account to Telegram, preventing survey pop-ups from appearing while the Help Center is open, and enabling customers to start a free trial using UPI.
