PlatinumGames Developing Triple-A Ninja Turtles Title

PlatinumGames, the studio best known for developing Bayonetta, has been officially announced as the developer behind the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin video game. The announcement was made during a Summer Game Fest showcase on Friday.

According to Dan Prigg, the head of the newly re-announced Paramount Games Studio, PlatinumGames signed on to the project because the studio’s team members were “huge fans” of the intellectual property. The statement was reported by Variety and confirmed by GamesIndustry.biz.

The game is based on the critically acclaimed comic book series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin,” written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz. Unlike previous lighthearted interpretations of the franchise, the comic presents a darker, dystopian future where only one Turtle, Michelangelo, remains alive following a war with the Foot Clan. He adopts the mantle of the Ronin, a masterless samurai, to seek vengeance for his fallen brothers.

PlatinumGames’ Creative Alignment

Paramount Games Studio stated that PlatinumGames’ action-oriented pedigree made them a natural fit for the adaptation. The studio has a history of developing high-octane, character-action games with intricate combat systems and stylized visuals. Prigg emphasized that the passion within Platinum was a key factor in securing the partnership compared to other studios.

No specific gameplay details or mechanics were revealed during the announcement. However, industry analysts expect the title to leverage a third-person action perspective, likely incorporating stealth, melee combat, and environmental traversal to reflect the tactical, grounded tone of the source material.

Paramount’s New Gaming Strategy

The announcement also served to officially reintroduce the Paramount Games Studio, an internal development division led by Prigg. The studio is tasked with expanding Paramount’s video game portfolio beyond licensed mobile and casual titles into full-fledged console and PC experiences. The partnership with PlatinumGames marks one of the company’s first major external collaborations under this new strategy.

The original comic series debuted in 2020 and quickly became a bestseller, leading to increased interest from game developers. Paramount has not yet confirmed a release window or target platforms for the title.

Industry observers note that the move signals a broader shift in how media conglomerates approach their intellectual property. By collaborating with established development studios known for core gaming audiences, companies like Paramount aim to bridge the gap between film, television, and interactive entertainment more effectively.

The Last Ronin video game is currently in development. No official release date has been provided, but further details are expected in future industry showcases or investor briefings.
