Capcom has confirmed that it will focus on reviving dormant intellectual property after its latest title, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide on its September 4 launch day. The release is the first mainline entry in the Onimusha series in more than two decades. The first day performance took the franchise past 10 million lifetime sales since its debut in 2001.
The company said that pre-release demos and hands-on showcases helped build awareness among a broad range of players ahead of the launch. That promotional activity was part of a wider effort to reintroduce the series to both existing fans and new audiences.
“In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently, ” Capcom said in a statement. The publisher added that it intends to “further maximize corporate value” by drawing on its back catalog. In this context, the term IP refers to intellectual property, which can include game series, characters, and related creative assets.
Long term strategy
Capcom has used almost identical language in previous investor communications. A December 2024 investor release tied to the game’s reveal contained a similar statement about reactivating older properties. The company also told investors as far back as 2019 that unlocking value from its older IP was part of its long term plans.
The latest announcement therefore reinforces an existing direction rather than introducing a sudden change. It follows the commercial reception of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which gives the company a current example of how a dormant franchise can perform when revived. Capcom has not named specific additional franchises that may be brought back under this policy.
Onimusha release details
Onimusha: Way of the Sword casts players as Miyamoto Musashi in Edo era Kyoto. It is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game sold more than 1 million units worldwide on launch day, September 4.
The Onimusha series began in 2001, and the latest release is its first mainline title in more than 20 years. Capcom said that hands-on opportunities before release helped build broad awareness, but it has not provided additional sales data beyond the first day milestone. The series has now passed 10 million lifetime sales.
Future outlook
Capcom’s stated focus on dormant IP suggests that older franchises may be evaluated for new entries alongside its regular release schedule. The company has described the approach as a way to further maximize corporate value. No official timelines or specific revival projects have been announced beyond Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Future announcements are expected to come through investor updates or product reveals. For now, the company’s
