The free and open source plugin, called Desktop Mode, is available now for all WordPress users.

The plugin allows users to manage WordPress admin screens in a windowed environment. Windows can be opened, resized, and stacked within the browser. A dock is positioned on the left side of the interface, and virtual desktops, referred to as Spaces, enable users to switch between different workflows.

The system operates on top of the existing WordPress installation without modifying the site, plugins, or setup.

Features and functionality

Posts, pages, and media items open as individual windows. Users can view a draft next to the media library and drag files between them without switching browser tabs. Content can be sent to a shared folder for team review and approval before publication. A unified Recycle Bin allows restoration of posts, pages, media, and comments from one location.

The workspace saves window layouts between sessions so that users resume their previous arrangement. A command palette, accessible via the keyboard shortcut Cmd+K, provides quick access to various functions. An optional AI copilot allows users to search across content, find posts by topic, surface related pages, and obtain answers about site content. Multiple desktops, called Spaces, help organize separate projects or workflows without visual clutter.

Extensibility and developer access

Desktop Mode includes hundreds of built-in hooks. Plugin authors can register native windows, dock items, desktop icons, commands, and AI tools from their own plugins without modifying Desktop Mode itself. Users can also register their own AI provider to connect the copilot to any model or service.

For example, a booking plugin could open its calendar as a native window inside Desktop Mode instead of redirecting to a separate admin page. A WooCommerce extension could display an orders dashboard in the dock. Nick, a long-time WordPress developer, created a native plugin on top of Desktop Mode to test the extensibility during the development phase.

The plugin runs entirely within the WordPress admin layer. It does not affect the site’s frontend, store, or checkout processes. The code is publicly available on GitHub, and contributions from the community are open.

Usage and adoption

Desktop Mode is active on hundreds of sites within its first week of release. Automattic provides ongoing maintenance, and community members are building additional plugins based on the software.

Installation requires downloading the plugin from the WordPress plugin directory or uploading it via Plugins to Add New to Upload Plugin. After uploading the plugin folder to /wp-content/plugins/ and activating it through the Plugins screen, users click the desktop icon in the admin bar’s top-right corner. The admin interface then reloads inside the desktop shell. Clicking the same icon again returns the user to the classic admin view.

The feature is a per-user opt-in. Activating it does not affect other team members until they choose to enable it themselves.

Implications and next steps

The introduction of Desktop Mode represents a shift in how WordPress admin tasks can be organized. By providing a windowed workspace with drag-and-drop functionality, the plugin may reduce the need for constant tab switching and improve workflow efficiency for site managers.

Automattic has indicated that the project is actively maintained and that community contributions are welcome. Future developments will likely depend on community feedback and the adoption rate among WordPress users.

Source: Delimiter

A new plugin developed by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, introduces a desktop-style workspace for the WordPress administrative interface.
