CD Projekt has reported that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has surpassed 65 million copies sold worldwide, a milestone announced alongside the confirmation of a third expansion for the 2015 title. The update came as the Polish game developer released its first quarter financial results for the current fiscal year.
The company recorded a 6 percent increase in overall revenue, reaching PLN 191 million, which is approximately USD 52.5 million. The sales figures for The Witcher 3 include both the original base game and its subsequent enhanced editions across multiple platforms.
Third expansion confirmed
CD Projekt confirmed that a new expansion for The Witcher 3 is in development. This marks the third major piece of downloadable content for the role playing game, following the previously released expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The developer has not yet provided a release date or specific details regarding the narrative focus or gameplay mechanics of the upcoming expansion.
The announcement indicates continued commercial and strategic investment in the Witcher franchise, more than eight years after the game’s initial launch. The title originally debuted in May 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and has since been re released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch.
Financial performance and context
The first quarter revenue growth of 6 percent year over year reflects stable performance for the company, which has also been working on several other major projects. These include the next mainline Witcher game, currently referred to as Project Polaris, as well as a remake of the first Witcher title and a separate project set within the Witcher universe code named Project Sirius.
CD Projekt has also been developing the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, known as Project Orion, alongside a new original intellectual property codenamed Project Hadar. The company has stated that it intends to release multiple major titles in the coming years, though specific timelines remain unannounced.
Industry significance
The 65 million sales figure places The Witcher 3 among the best selling video games of all time, a notable achievement for a single player, narrative driven role playing game. The title has maintained strong sales momentum through periodic discounts, next generation console upgrades, and the ongoing popularity of the Netflix television adaptation of the Witcher franchise.
Analysts have noted that the decision to develop a third expansion for an eight year old game is an unusual move in the gaming industry, where most studios focus on sequels or new intellectual properties. However, CD Projekt has previously stated that it sees value in supporting its existing catalog while developing new projects.
Looking ahead
CD Projekt has not announced a launch window for the third Witcher 3 expansion. The company is expected to provide further details during its next major investor presentation or at a gaming industry event. The developer continues to balance multiple projects across its studios in Warsaw and Krakow, with the Witcher franchise remaining a central pillar of its long term strategy.
