A new artificial intelligence tool called Telex is changing how website owners create custom WordPress themes. The platform, developed by Automattic, allows users to generate complete, functional themes through text prompts or image uploads, significantly lowering the technical barrier to custom web design.
Traditionally, developing a WordPress theme requires knowledge of PHP, CSS, and the platform’s template hierarchy, a process with a steep learning curve. Telex aims to remove that complexity entirely. Users describe their desired website’s look and function, and the AI generates a corresponding theme package ready for installation.
How the Theme Generation Process Works
The process begins with a user providing a detailed text prompt. For optimal results, the description should include the site’s purpose, visual style, layout structure, and key elements. The tool includes an “Enhance Prompt” feature that rewrites user input into a comprehensive design brief, adding professional considerations for typography, spacing, and hierarchy.
As an alternative to text, users can upload a reference image, such as a competitor’s site or a brand mockup. Telex analyzes the visual to guide the theme’s direction. Following the input, the AI produces four distinct theme variations for the user to compare and select from.
Building a Complete Site Structure
The initial generation typically creates a homepage template. Users then instruct the AI to build additional templates for necessary page types, such as services, about, contact, or archive pages. This step ensures a cohesive site structure where different content types have appropriate layouts while maintaining visual consistency.
After selecting a base theme and generating supplementary templates, users can refine details directly within Telex. This includes adjusting typography, color palettes, spacing, and optimizing the layout for mobile devices or dark mode.
Installation and Practical Application
Once satisfied, users download a standard ZIP file containing all theme assets, including templates, stylesheets, and configuration files. This file is uploaded to a WordPress site via the admin dashboard. Upon activation, WordPress automatically maps existing site content, like pages and blog posts, into the new theme’s structure.
The tool facilitates future updates. Users can return to Telex, modify their theme, download a new ZIP file, and upload it to their site. This process applies the new design while preserving all existing content.
Testing and Current Development Status
Industry experts recommend testing AI-generated themes in a safe environment before deploying them on a live website. Options for testing include browser-based tools like WordPress Playground or local development applications such as WordPress Studio.
Automattic has clarified that Telex remains an experimental tool. As with many AI applications, results can vary, and users may encounter occasional issues. The company indicates that user feedback from early projects will guide the tool’s future development roadmap.
The release of Telex represents a continued trend of integrating generative AI into mainstream web development and content management workflows, offering a new approach to a traditionally technical task.
