Krafton Record Q2 Revenue Surges 94.9% on Subnautica, PUBG Strength

South Korean video game holding company Krafton Inc. posted its strongest second quarter on record, with revenue climbing 94.9 percent year over year to 1.29 trillion won, or approximately 889.1 million U.S. dollars. Operating profit for the three months ended June 30 also rose sharply, increasing 67 percent to 410.9 billion won, about 283.1 million U.S. dollars.

The financial results, released by the company on August 8, mark a significant acceleration in growth for the publisher behind the global battle royale phenomenon. Krafton credited the performance primarily to sustained engagement from the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) franchise across both PC and mobile platforms, as well as the acquisition and continued success of the Subnautica series.

Drivers of Growth: PUBG and Subnautica

Krafton stated that the PUBG franchise remained the cornerstone of its revenue base. The company reported strong active user numbers for PUBG: Battlegrounds on PC and consoles, alongside robust in game spending in PUBG Mobile in key markets including India, where the title operates under the name Battlegrounds Mobile India.

The Subnautica franchise, which Krafton acquired through its purchase of Unknown Worlds Entertainment in 2021, also contributed meaningfully to the quarter’s results. The underwater survival series, known for titles such as Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, saw a surge in sales and player activity during the period, partially driven by new content updates and platform promotions.

Krafton did not disclose specific revenue breakdowns by franchise in its quarterly filing, but executives indicated during an earnings call that both core IPs performed ahead of internal expectations. The company noted that the diversity of its portfolio, spanning a competitive multiplayer shooter and a narrative driven exploration game, helped buffer against market volatility.

Operational and Market Context

The record results come amid a broader period of consolidation and expansion for the Seoul based publisher. Krafton has been actively investing in new intellectual property and expanding its development studios globally. The company has established a U.S. office in Los Angeles and has been recruiting talent for several unannounced projects.

Analysts covering the South Korean gaming sector noted that Krafton’s ability to generate growth from both established live service titles and acquired single player properties demonstrates operational flexibility. The 94.9 percent revenue increase also reflects a favorable comparison base from the prior year period, when the company faced softer market conditions following the post pandemic normalization of gaming engagement.

Krafton’s operating margin remained healthy at approximately 31.8 percent for the quarter, down slightly from the prior year but still within the upper range of major global game publishers. The company attributed minor margin pressure to increased marketing spend ahead of several planned title launches in the second half of the fiscal year.

Outlook and Forward Guidance

Looking ahead, Krafton management indicated that it expects continued momentum from the PUBG franchise through seasonal events and esports tournaments scheduled for the third quarter. The company is also preparing to release a new major update for Subnautica later this year, though specific release dates have not been confirmed.

Krafton reiterated its commitment to expanding its portfolio beyond its two flagship series. The company is currently developing multiple new titles, including an extraction shooter codenamed Project Black Budget and a life simulation game. No launch windows have been provided for these projects. The company’s next quarterly earnings report is expected in November.
