Apple iPhone 17e Doubles Storage to 256GB at £599 Launch Price

Apple iPhone 17e Doubles Storage to 256GB at £599 Launch Price

Apple has introduced the iPhone 17e as its new entry-level smartphone, delivering several key upgrades over the previous iPhone 16e model while maintaining the same starting price. The announcement was made as part of the company’s ongoing smartphone lineup refresh, aimed at providing enhanced value in the budget-conscious segment of the market.

The most immediate improvement is in storage capacity. The iPhone 17e starts at £599 with 256GB of storage, which is double the 128GB base capacity offered by the iPhone 16e at its equivalent launch price. This change addresses a common point of feedback regarding entry-level storage limitations.

Performance and Connectivity Upgrades

Internally, the device is powered by Apple’s new A19 chip. This processor is built on a 3-nanometer manufacturing technology, which Apple states provides faster performance and enables new AI-driven features compared to the A18 chip used in the prior generation.

For cellular connectivity, the iPhone 17e incorporates the new C1X modem. Apple claims this component offers data speeds twice as fast as the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e. The company also states the C1X modem uses 30 percent less energy than the modem found in the current iPhone 16 Pro model, which could contribute to improved battery efficiency.

Camera and Durability Enhancements

The photographic system sees refinement despite retaining a single rear sensor. The iPhone 17e uses a new 48-megapixel Fusion camera that is capable of producing optical-quality 2x zoom shots through a sensor crop and computational photography. Apple reports improvements to portrait mode processing, citing smarter depth recognition and better High Dynamic Range (HDR) performance. While the iPhone 16e also featured a 48-megapixel sensor, the new image processing pipeline and enhanced AI features are intended to deliver clearer low-light photographs and more natural-looking portraits.

Device durability receives an update with the introduction of Ceramic Shield 2 on the front display. Apple states this material offers three times better scratch resistance than the glass used on the iPhone 16e and also reduces glare. A notable addition for the series is MagSafe support, enabling compatibility with magnetic chargers and accessories, a feature omitted from the previous generation’s entry model.

Design and Feature Continuity

In terms of design, the iPhone 17e maintains a similar form factor to its predecessor. It features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display housed in an aluminum chassis with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. The new model introduces a matte finish and expands the color options to include a soft pink alongside the standard black and white choices.

Key connectivity features from the previous model are carried forward. Satellite connectivity capabilities remain, including Emergency SOS via satellite, the ability to send Messages via satellite, and access to roadside assistance services when users are outside of terrestrial cellular network coverage.

Market Position and Availability

The launch of the iPhone 17e represents Apple’s strategy to bolster the value proposition of its most affordable current iPhone. By doubling the base storage and integrating a newer chipset, modem, and camera software without a price increase, the company aims to make core smartphone technology more accessible. The inclusion of previously pro-exclusive features like MagSafe also works to reduce the differentiation between its entry-level and premium devices.

Industry analysts will be observing consumer response to these upgrades, particularly in competitive markets where storage capacity and battery life are significant purchase drivers. The official sales release date and pre-order timeline for the iPhone 17e are expected to be announced by Apple in the coming days, with availability likely to follow the company’s standard global rollout pattern for new iPhone models.
