A security Vulnerability in GitHub Codespaces could have allowed attackers to steal sensitive repository access tokens by manipulating the GitHub Copilot AI assistant. The flaw, discovered by cybersecurity firm Orca Security and dubbed “RoguePilot,” has been patched by Microsoft, the owner of GitHub.
The issue stemmed from the interaction between GitHub’s cloud-based development environment, Codespaces, and its AI-powered coding assistant, Copilot. According to researchers, an attacker could embed hidden instructions within a GitHub issue’s description. When a developer using Codespaces opened that issue, Copilot would automatically process the text and could be tricked into executing those malicious instructions.
Mechanism of the Attack
Orca Security’s research team detailed a scenario where an attacker creates a seemingly normal issue in a public repository. Within the issue body, they would hide specific directives crafted to exploit Copilot’s autocomplete and code suggestion features. Because Copilot operates within the developer’s Codespace, it would have access to the environment’s secrets, including the GITHUB_TOKEN.
This token is a critical piece of security infrastructure. It is automatically generated for use within GitHub Actions workflows and Codespaces, providing permissions to interact with the repository. If compromised, the token could allow an attacker to push malicious code, exfiltrate private data, or even take control of the affected repository.
Discovery and Responsible Disclosure
Orca Security identified the vulnerability and reported it to Microsoft through GitHub’s official bug bounty program. The cybersecurity firm followed a practice known as responsible disclosure, giving the vendor time to develop and deploy a fix before publicly revealing the details of the flaw. This coordinated process helps protect users while ensuring vulnerabilities are addressed.
Microsoft confirmed the issue and developed a security update. The patch modifies how Copilot interacts with content in GitHub Issues within the Codespaces environment, effectively neutralizing the RoguePilot attack vector.
