Fortnite iOS Relaunch Hits 3.4 Million Downloads

Epic Games’ worldwide re-release of Fortnite on Apple’s iOS platform last week generated an estimated 3.4 million downloads, a figure that represents the highest weekly volume for the title since its removal from the App Store in 2020.

The download estimate, reported by market intelligence firm data, marks an eight year high for the battle royale game on iOS devices. The figure covers the first seven days of availability following the global rollout on July 25.

Background of the Return

Fortnite was originally removed from the iOS App Store in August 2020 after Epic Games deliberately introduced a direct payment system that bypassed Apple’s 30 percent commission on in-app purchases. Apple terminated Epic’s developer account, citing a violation of its terms of service.

Epic subsequently filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, arguing that the company’s App Store practices constituted an illegal monopoly over software distribution on iOS. The legal battle has continued for nearly four years.

Fortnite’s return to iOS in the European Union was made possible by the Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to allow alternative app marketplaces. In the United States and other global markets, the return was facilitated by Apple’s decision to reinstate Epic’s developer account following a court ruling.

Regional Availability

The global rollout includes most major markets, with the notable exception of Australia. Epic has indicated that the delay in Australia relates to ongoing regulatory discussions regarding app store payment practices in that region. The company has stated it hopes to launch in Australia at a later date pending resolution of those issues.

Users in supported regions can download Fortnite through the Epic Games Store app for iOS, which is distributed directly from Epic’s website rather than through Apple’s App Store. This method allows Epic to avoid Apple’s standard commission fees on transactions within Fortnite.

Market Implications

The download figure is significant for Epic Games as it demonstrates continued demand for the title on mobile platforms even after a prolonged absence. Industry analysts suggest the strong uptake may be driven by a combination of pent up demand from former iOS players and cross platform progression features that allow users to carry over their accounts from other devices.

mobile gaming remains the largest segment of the global games industry by revenue. Fortnite’s return to iOS gives Epic access to a user base that has been largely unavailable to the title since 2020, though Android users have been able to access the game through alternative distribution channels throughout that period.

Technical Implementation

The iOS version of Fortnite currently runs at 60 frames per second on supported devices and includes full cross platform play with PC, console, and Android users. The application also supports controller input and has been optimized for the latest Apple silicon chips.

Epic has stated that future updates will bring improved visual fidelity and performance enhancements to the iOS version as the company continues to develop its Unreal Engine technology for mobile platforms.

Looking Ahead

Epic is expected to continue its legal battle with Apple over the App Store commission structure, with the next major hearing scheduled for later this year. The company has also indicated plans to bring other titles from its catalog to iOS through the Epic Games Store application.

The ongoing regulatory environment in various jurisdictions, including the European Union’s Digital Markets Act and pending legislation in other regions, is likely to shape the future availability of alternative app stores on iOS devices globally.
