Virgin Media O2 has announced it has now supported one million people in the UK who were previously considered ‘digitally excluded’ to gain access to the internet. This milestone, achieved over a three-year period, is the result of a multi-faceted initiative combining free mobile data, donated devices, and improvements to rural network coverage. The program specifically targeted low-income households, isolated rural communities, and other vulnerable users.
The telecommunications operator stated it has also exceeded its digital skills training goal. It has provided digital skills training and online safety guidance to 8.5 million people, surpassing its initial commitment of six million by a significant margin of 2.5 million individuals.
Partnerships and Key Initiatives
The effort has been conducted in close collaboration with charity partners. A central component is the National Databank, run in partnership with the Good Things Foundation. This initiative, which functions like a food bank but for mobile data, has provided free O2 data to more than 500,000 people, primarily through O2 retail stores.
Other core programs that contributed to the one million milestone include device reuse schemes. Through partnerships with organizations like Hubbub’s Community Calling, over 32,000 refurbished smartphones have been redistributed to those in need.
The company has also implemented tablet lending programs designed to support individuals facing homelessness or domestic abuse. Furthermore, connectivity rollouts with youth and community groups have involved building full-fibre broadband infrastructure and deploying portable WiFi hubs.
Future Commitments and Policy Alignment
To maintain the program’s momentum, Virgin Media O2 has pledged to distribute an additional 12,000 refurbished smartphones by 2026. The company noted that this milestone supports the broader objectives outlined in the UK Government’s digital inclusion Action Plan. It highlights a growing alignment between public policy goals and industry-led programs aimed at reducing the digital divide.
Nicola Green, Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Officer at Virgin Media O2, commented on the achievement. She stated that the past five years have demonstrated the tangible impact of targeted services and partnerships in tackling digital exclusion.
The operator signaled that demand for affordable connectivity and essential digital skills continues to rise across the country. It emphasized that, despite reaching this significant figure, its work in this area is far from complete. The company anticipates ongoing efforts to address the persistent challenges of digital inequality.
