Eve Online Developer CCP Rebrands as Fenris Creations After Buyout

The company behind the long running space simulation MMO Eve Online has undergone a significant corporate restructuring, including a management-led buyout and a complete rebranding. CCP Games, formerly a subsidiary of South Korean video game publisher Pearl Abyss, has been sold back to its CEO and renamed Fenris Creations.

The transaction concluded this week, with CCP Games breaking away from its parent company. Pearl Abyss had originally acquired the Icelandic developer in 2018. The deal was valued at less than half of the original purchase price and reportedly included a cryptocurrency component of approximately $20 million.

Rebranding Details

Following the sale, the company announced it would no longer operate under the CCP Games name. The entity has been rebranded as Fenris Creations. The name change marks a new chapter for the studio, which has faced a challenging period under Korean ownership.

Industry sources indicate that the original acquisition by Pearl Abyss was valued at around $425 million in 2018. The recent buyback price, combined with the crypto payment, reflects a significantly lower valuation for the firm.

Background and Leadership

The company was originally founded in 1997 by a group of Icelandic entrepreneurs. Its flagship title, Eve Online, was released in 2003 and has since developed a dedicated global player base known for its complex economic systems and player-driven conflicts. The studio has also worked on other projects, including virtual reality titles and experimental games.

Hilmar Veigar Petursson, the long time CEO of the company, led the buyback initiative. Petursson has been a central figure in the development and management of Eve Online for over two decades.

Strategic Implications

The separation from Pearl Abyss is expected to provide Fenris Creations with greater operational autonomy. Under Korean ownership, the studio faced cultural and strategic differences regarding development priorities. The rebranding to Fenris Creations signals a shift in the company’s corporate identity, distancing it from the CCP acronym.

There has been speculation regarding the reasoning behind the name change. Petursson stated publicly that the rebranding was partially motivated by a desire to avoid any association with the Chinese Communist Party, given the global political climate and the negative connotations some players and partners might associate with the abbreviation “CCP.” He was quoted as saying, “I’m not going to fight the Chinese Communist Party,” indicating a strategic decision to simplify corporate perception.

Future Operations

Fenris Creations will retain its headquarters in Reykjavik, Iceland, and will continue to support and develop Eve Online. The studio has confirmed that no immediate changes to the game’s development roadmap or player experience are anticipated as a direct result of the ownership change. The company is expected to focus on its core franchise while exploring new opportunities for independent growth.

The new structure allows Fenris Creations to operate as a privately held firm, giving its leadership more flexibility in decision making without the pressure of public market reporting or parent company oversight.
