A new set of Artificial Intelligence tools designed to automate the creation of WordPress websites has been released. The tools, developed by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, include a plugin for the Claude Cowork AI platform and a series of reusable AI instruction sets called Skills.
The release aims to simplify website building for users without technical expertise. The tools allow individuals to generate complete WordPress block themes through conversational prompts with an AI assistant.
How the AI Site Builder Works
The central component is a Claude Cowork plugin. Users initiate a conversation with the Claude AI, describe the desired website, and the tool generates a functional block theme. This theme is then deployed to a local development environment within WordPress Studio for preview and further editing.
For instance, a user can request a site for a fitness coaching business. The AI would then ask clarifying questions, present multiple design options, and iterate based on feedback. The final output is a preview link and a downloadable theme compatible with any WordPress installation.
To activate the plugin, users instruct their Claude Cowork chat to utilize the tool by providing a link to its public repository on GitHub.
Underlying AI Skills
The functionality is powered by three publicly available Skills. These are modular instruction sets that guide AI assistants to perform specific, complex tasks related to Web Development.
The first Skill handles Site Specification, systematically gathering necessary context and information about the project. The second focuses on Site Design, generating visual options and assisting with typography, color palettes, and overall style. The third Skill is for WordPress Theme Creation, applying established best practices to produce a working block theme.
These Skills are not exclusive to Claude Cowork. Developers state they can be adapted for use with other AI platforms, such as ChatGPT or Codex, providing a degree of flexibility for different workflows.
Development Status and Future
The company has classified these tools as being in active development, with updates and changes occurring frequently. Despite this, they report that the current iteration is already capable of producing publishable themes, with performance expected to improve over time.
The initiative reflects a broader industry trend of integrating generative AI into software development and creative processes.
