Vodafone IoT and U.S. satellite connectivity specialist Skylo Technologies have announced a trial of a new hybrid network solution designed to maintain connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices in areas with limited or no mobile coverage. The partnership aims to combine Vodafone’s terrestrial mobile network with Skylo’s satellite technology to provide uninterrupted service for connected devices deployed in remote locations. A full commercial service is planned to follow if the initial testing phase proves successful.

Technology and Network Integration

Skylo provides satellite connectivity specifically for IoT devices. Its network is notable for working with standard IoT hardware and utilizing existing mobile communication standards. This approach is intended to make it simpler for mobile network operators like Vodafone to integrate satellite coverage without requiring significant modifications to end-user devices or hardware.

The trial will involve IoT devices equipped with a Vodafone SIM card automatically switching between the mobile network and the satellite network when terrestrial signal becomes unavailable. This seamless transition is a key feature of the proposed service, aiming to ensure constant data transmission.

Geographic Reach and Company Background

Skylo’s satellite network currently provides coverage across 36 countries, spanning approximately 70 million square kilometers. This extensive reach is designed to extend connectivity far beyond the range of traditional cellular masts, targeting vast rural and remote areas.

The company was founded by a group of engineers and scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University in the United States. It also maintains a deployment team with operations in Finland and India.

Connected devices utilizing this service will be managed through Vodafone IoT’s existing managed connectivity platform.
