Microsoft’s Asha Sharma prioritises Xbox reset and exclusivity

Microsoft’s Asha Sharma prioritises Xbox reset and exclusivity

Asha Sharma, the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft’s Xbox division, has outlined plans to refocus the gaming business, stating that her immediate priority is “resetting the business” to achieve long term growth.

Speaking in a recent interview, Sharma said her goal is to position Xbox as “the number one gaming and entertainment company.” The strategy involves a recalibration of the company’s approach to console exclusivity and the integration of artificial intelligence technologies.

Reset under new leadership

Sharma took the helm of Xbox in late 2024, succeeding Phil Spencer. Her comments represent the most direct signal of a strategic shift since the leadership change. She emphasised a need to refocus the business after a period of expansion that included the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

“The reset is about clarifying our priorities,” Sharma said. “We need to ensure every investment aligns with our core mission of delivering great games and entertainment experiences.”

Exclusivity as a priority

Sharma confirmed that Xbox will prioritise exclusivity in its game development pipeline. This marks a notable shift from previous strategies that saw several first party titles released on rival platforms.

The company has faced criticism from some segments of its player base regarding the decision to release games such as Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Sharma indicated that future releases would be evaluated on a case by case basis but emphasised that exclusive content would be central to the value proposition of the Xbox ecosystem.

“Exclusivity matters because it gives players a reason to choose Xbox,” Sharma said. “We will be more deliberate about what games remain exclusive to our platforms.”

Artificial intelligence strategy

Sharma also addressed the role of artificial intelligence in Xbox’s future. She said AI tools would be used to improve game development efficiency and to enhance player experiences through smarter matchmaking, dynamic content generation, and improved user interfaces.

Microsoft has invested heavily in AI through its partnership with OpenAI, and Sharma said these capabilities would be integrated into Xbox’s development tools and services. However, she cautioned that AI would not replace human creativity in game design.

“AI is a tool to accelerate and augment what developers do, not a substitute for artistic vision,” Sharma said. “We are exploring ways to use it responsibly.”

Industry context

The announcements come at a time of significant change in the video game industry. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard closed in 2023 after a lengthy regulatory battle. The company has since faced questions about how it will manage a large portfolio of studios and franchises.

Competitors Sony and Nintendo continue to rely heavily on exclusive titles to drive hardware sales. Analysts have noted that Xbox’s previous strategy of releasing games across multiple platforms risked diluting the appeal of its own console.

Sharma’s reset is expected to include a review of the company’s publishing pipeline, investment in first party studios, and a clearer definition of what constitutes an Xbox exclusive.
