Jetpack Podcast Merges Podcasting With Blog and Newsletter

New Service Unifies Content Publishing on WordPress.com

Automattic has launched Jetpack Podcast, a new feature that allows users to publish, distribute, and grow a podcast directly from their WordPress.com website. The service integrates the podcast feed with existing blog posts and newsletters, creating a unified content hub on a single domain.

The new tool is available in the Jetpack menu within the WordPress.com dashboard. Users can start a podcast at no cost, with the option to upgrade to a Premium plan for additional features.

How the Distribution System Works

When a user publishes an episode through WordPress.com, the system automatically distributes the content to multiple channels. The episode appears as a blog post on the user’s site, complete with show notes and an embedded audio player. Simultaneously, the same content is sent to email subscribers via the site’s newsletter function.

Followers on the WordPress.com Reader will see the episode in their feed. Beyond the platform, the podcast is listed on major podcast directories including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, YouTube, Amazon Music, and the Podcast Index. The system relies on RSS feeds to ensure compatibility with other podcast apps.

Audience Ownership and Portability

Automattic emphasized that Jetpack Podcast is designed to give creators control over their audience and content. The website and podcast operate on the user’s own domain, rather than being locked into a third-party platform. Subscriber lists are fully exportable at any time.

If a user decides to leave WordPress.com, their audience will not be lost. Because podcast apps subscribe directly to the user’s RSS feed rather than a platform-specific feed, listeners will continue to receive new episodes regardless of the hosting provider.

Analytics for Individual Episodes

The service includes a podcast stats dashboard that provides episode-level analytics. Data is broken down by episode, listening app, and geographic location. Users can analyze specific time periods to track audience growth and engagement trends over time.

Free and Premium Tiers

Automattic is offering the basic podcast publishing service for free. The free tier includes setup assistance and distribution to major podcast apps. Users who upgrade to a WordPress.com Premium plan gain access to audio hosting on WordPress.com, podcast statistics, an episode dashboard, and an episode player block for posts.

The Premium plan also includes other platform features outside of podcasting.

How to Access the Feature

Users can find Jetpack Podcast by opening their WordPress.com dashboard, clicking on Jetpack in the sidebar, and then selecting the Podcast option. From there, they can choose a plan and enable podcasting to begin. A support article on the WordPress.com website provides detailed setup instructions.

Market Context and Potential Impact

Jetpack Podcast positions WordPress.com as a direct competitor to platforms such as Substack and Spotify, which often encourage creators to keep their audiences within proprietary ecosystems. By allowing creators to maintain their own domain and export subscriber data, Automattic is addressing growing concerns among content creators about platform dependency and audience ownership.

The move also reflects a broader trend in the publishing industry toward integrated content strategies. Combining blog posts, newsletters, and podcasts under a single domain simplifies workflow for creators and ensures consistent branding across formats.

Automattic has not announced a specific timeline for future podcasting features, but the company has indicated that user feedback will guide product development. The company is encouraging existing and prospective podcasters to test the service and provide input on what additional capabilities they would like to see.
