Google announced a significant update to its Android operating system during a press event on Wednesday, introducing new features powered by agentic artificial intelligence and a novel method for creating on-screen widgets known as “vibe coding.” The rollout, which began immediately for users of Pixel devices and select Android partners, marks a shift toward more proactive and customizable mobile interactions.
According to a company statement, the update centers on the expansion of the Gemini AI assistant, which will now include capabilities for autonomous task execution. This “agentic” functionality allows Gemini to perform multi step actions on behalf of the user, such as booking a restaurant reservation or managing calendar events, without requiring manual input for each step. The system processes natural language commands and can access relevant apps and services with user permission.
Gemini AI now integrated into Gboard
In addition to the agentic features, Google confirmed that Gemini intelligence will now be embedded directly into the Gboard keyboard application. This integration enables real time dictation and automatic form filling, allowing users to speak or type commands that automatically populate fields in forms, message threads, and other input areas. The feature is designed to reduce friction when composing emails, searching for information, or completing online registrations.
The dictation function uses on device processing for basic commands and cloud processing for more complex requests, according to a Google product manager who spoke during the event. The company stated that privacy controls remain intact, with users able to review and delete voice data through their Google Account settings.
Vibe-coded widgets arrive
Perhaps the most distinctive feature announced is the introduction of “vibe-coded widgets.” This term describes a new tool that allows users to create custom widgets on their home screen using natural language descriptions. For example, a user could type “create a weather widget that shows sunset time and UV index” and the system would generate a functional widget without requiring any programming knowledge.
The technology relies on a combination of language models and template based rendering. Google stated that the feature is in early access and will be refined based on user feedback. The company did not provide a specific timeline for a wider release but indicated that the feature would be available to developers through an API later this year.
Broader implications for mobile computing
The inclusion of agentic AI and user generated widgets represents a strategic move by Google to differentiate Android from rival platforms. While Apple has introduced similar on device AI features through its Intelligence system, Google’s approach emphasizes interoperability with third party services and greater user customization.
Industry analysts noted that the shift toward agentic AI could change how users interact with their devices. For now, the features are rolling out to English language users in the United States, with additional regions and languages expected in subsequent updates.
