Google Android Show: Googlebooks, Vibe-Coded Widgets and More

Google held its annual Android Show event ahead of the I/O developer conference, unveiling several new products and updates centered on artificial intelligence integration. The announcements included a new line of laptops called Googlebooks, further agentic features for the Gemini assistant, and the introduction of widgets that can be created through natural language descriptions, a process the company described as “vibe-coding.” The event took place on Tuesday at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.

The centerpiece of the announcement was the Googlebooks line of laptops. These devices are designed from the ground up with an AI-first operating system, marking a significant shift from traditional mobile and desktop paradigms. While detailed hardware specifications were not released during the show, Google executives emphasized that the Googlebooks would run a fully integrated version of Android, optimized for on-device AI processing and cloud-based generative features.

New Gemini Agentic Features

Google also demonstrated several new agentic capabilities for its Gemini AI assistant. These features allow Gemini to perform multi-step tasks on behalf of users across different applications. For example, a user could ask Gemini to create a calendar event based on an email draft, then send invitations and generate a brief summary of the meeting agenda without further prompts.

The company stated that these agentic actions are powered by a new reasoning engine that can parse user intent and interact with third-party APIs. The updates will roll out to Android devices and Google services in the coming weeks.

Vibe-Coded Widgets

One of the more innovative announcements was the introduction of “vibe-coded” widgets. Using this feature, users can describe the functionality they want in plain English, and Google’s generative AI will produce a functional widget for the Android home screen. For example, a user could type “show me the weather for my next three travel destinations” and the system would generate a custom widget pulling data from the weather app and the calendar.

Google confirmed that the feature uses a combination of on-device language models and a lightweight code generation framework. The widgets are executed within a sandboxed environment to prevent security issues.

Gemini Directly in Chrome

Google also announced the integration of Gemini directly into the Chrome browser for Android and desktop. The side panel feature, previously limited to summarizing articles or drafting emails, will now be able to access live web content and assist with tasks such as comparing product prices across multiple tabs or generating a structured summary of a research topic.

This integration is expected to give the company a more direct channel to compete with other browser-based AI assistants. Google said the feature will be enabled by default for users with an active Google account.

Refreshed Android Auto

The company also unveiled a major update to Android Auto. The new interface adopts a card-based layout, allowing for more contextual information to be displayed at a glance. Google said the system now supports more vehicle-specific hardware, such as in-car cameras for driver monitoring and ambient lighting control.

Navigation integration with Google Maps has also been improved, with real-time parking suggestions and EV charging station availability now displayed directly on the main screen.

Implications for Developers

Developers will have access to new APIs for integrating with the Gemini agentic framework and the vibe-coded widget system. Google also announced that the Googlebooks platform will support a new packaging format for Android apps that provides better performance on higher-specification hardware.

Early access to the Googlebooks developer kit is expected to open later this year.

The full suite of features, including the Googlebooks laptops, is expected to launch alongside the stable release of Android 16, currently scheduled for late 2025. Pricing for the Googlebooks line has not yet been announced.
