Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Trailer Released Online

The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “The Odyssey” has been released. The movie is scheduled for a global theatrical release in July 2026. The project is an adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer.

The trailer shows actor Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca. The film depicts his journey home following the Trojan War. According to the footage, Damon’s character must fight a series of supernatural enemies and navigate treacherous seas to return to his wife, Penelope.

In the trailer, actor Robert Pattinson can be seen pursuing a character played by Anne Hathaway. The scene suggests a subplot involving a secondary character attempting to court Penelope in Odysseus’s absence. The narrative follows the core elements of the original poem, including encounters with gods, monsters, and the constant challenge of getting home.

The film marks a departure from Nolan’s previous original concepts and science fiction themes. It represents his first direct attempt at adapting a classical work. The production has been in development for several years and attracted a star studded ensemble cast.

Cast and Production Details

The “Odyssey” boasts a large ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o in undisclosed roles. Additionally, Charlize Theron, Ben Affleck, and John Boyega are part of the cast. The film is being produced under Nolan’s production company together with Syncopy.

The movie is being shot on location across multiple countries to reflect the vast geography described in the poem. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who worked on “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer,” is handling the visual direction. The production makes extensive use of IMAX cameras for many scenes.

The music for the film is composed by Ludwig Göransson, who previously worked with Nolan on “Tenet” and “Oppenheimer.” The trailer features a dramatic score that deliberately evokes the tone of an epic historical drama.

Marketing and Distribution Strategy

The release date for the trailer was set to coincide with several major social media campaigns. Universal Pictures, the studio distributing the film, has started a multi phase promotional rollout. The trailer is being played in select IMAX theaters ahead of other major releases.

The film is currently in post production and has completed principal photography. The budget for the adaptation is reportedly one of the highest in Nolan’s career, reflecting the scale of the battle scenes and visual effects required.

The poem itself has seen many adaptations in film and television. The most famous prior version is the 1954 film “Ulysses” starring Kirk Douglas. Nolan’s version is expected to bring a more grounded and realistic approach to the fantastical elements of the story, consistent with his filmmaking style.

Industry analysts predict strong box office performance for the film. The success of “Oppenheimer” in 2023 has bolstered confidence in Nolan’s ability to attract large audiences for non franchise properties. Advance ticket sales for “The Odyssey” are expected to open within the next two months.

No official runtime has been announced. However, given the length of the source material and Nolan’s past film durations, industry sources suggest a final cut lasting around three hours. The film is a standalone project and is not part of a larger series.
