Vodafone Deploys 5G Standalone at Manchester Airport

Vodafone has activated a new 5G Standalone network across the departure areas of Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 at Manchester Airport. The deployment, part of a wider UK investment program, aims to provide enhanced mobile connectivity for passengers and support digital infrastructure for airport operations.

The new indoor network is designed to improve both 4G and existing non standalone 5G coverage. It offers faster data speeds and greater reliability, particularly during periods of high passenger traffic. Customers of Vodafone with compatible devices and service plans will experience the upgraded connectivity throughout the covered terminals.

Operational Benefits and Business Applications

Beyond passenger use, the advanced network is intended to support operational improvements for businesses operating within the airport. Potential applications include automated border control e gates, enhanced systems for retail stock management, and other data intensive services that require robust, low latency connections.

Andrea Donà, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone, commented on the project’s significance. “Manchester Airport is the third busiest airport in the UK and a major contributor to both the North of England and the wider UK economy,” Donà stated. “Delivering 5G Standalone ensures customers receive the best possible network experience, while the airport benefits from world class digital infrastructure.”

Part of a Major National Investment

This installation is a component of the £11 billion UK investment program announced by the merged Vodafone and Three entity in June 2025. The initiative includes a commitment to extend 5G Standalone coverage to 99 percent of the UK population by 2030, with a further increase to 99.96 percent targeted by 2034.

Analyses associated with the investment suggest it could generate approximately £2.8 billion for the UK’s transportation and storage sector. In the North West region specifically, the wider program is projected to contribute around £9.9 billion in economic growth.

The nationwide investment will involve upgrades to thousands of mobile sites. This infrastructure work will enable customers of both Vodafone and Three to access the strongest available network signal without incurring additional charges.

Alignment with Airport Development

Jennifer Byrne Smith, Director of Customer Operations at Manchester Airport, noted that the network upgrade aligns with the airport’s broader investments in the passenger experience. “It complements our £1.3 billion transformation of Terminal 2, which is nearing completion, as well as ongoing redevelopment work in Terminal 1,” Byrne Smith said.

The rollout of 5G Standalone technology at a major transport hub like Manchester Airport is seen as a key step in the national network transformation following the merger of Vodafone and Three. The focus now shifts to the continued expansion of this infrastructure across other critical locations and population centers throughout the United Kingdom, in line with the publicly stated 2030 and 2034 coverage targets.
